Question: How does a brand new blog start out with a Google page rank of 3?…
Answer: The owner foolishly doesn’t back up her blog and has to start from scratch after a hosting catastrophe.
Even though I knew better to begin with, that’s one mistake I will never make again, and I want to make sure you never will. Therefore, I thought I’d start my first post on my “new” blog by passing on a lesson learned.
Backup your wordpress blog on a regular basis!
This was one of my older blogs, which I started before I learned about how to backup a wordpress blog. By the time I finally discovered the availability of various WordPress backup plugins, I had gotten too distracted with other projects to take the time to install one on this site.
Fortunately, when disaster struck, I had been neglecting the site for quite some time anyway, so I only lost about 20 or so posts. Not to imply that those posts weren’t valuable, but I’m an optimist and it could have been worse.
Anyway, in case your interested, here is the the backup plugin I decided to go with. It’s different from the one’s I have been using on my other blogs, which email me my backups.
The one I installed on this blog, is an online backup. I know what your thinking. What’s the point of backing up your blog, if you are just going to store it on your server.
Well that’s the good part. It’s not stored on my server. It’s stored remotely on the developers site…for free!
The plugin is called WP Online Backup and the developer is Backup Technology. The backups can be scheduled or manually generated. You can choose to have the backups emailed, downloaded, or stored on their servers. Each account is granted a quota of 50MiB.
Not bad right?
It’s your typical plugin installation. You just upload it to your wordpress blog’s plugins directory, which is located within the wp-content directory. You then activate it within the plugins section of your blog’s admin panel.
I found this very easy to configure. You must first create a free account at backup-technology.com. Then you click “online backup” from the tools menu, within your blog admin panel, to schedule your routine backups.
For additional security, you get to create your own encryption key. You just have to make sure you remember it or else you won’t be able to access your backups.
This a great plugin and I recommend it to anyone who is not already backing up their WordPress blog, or to anyone who is not satisfied with the backup plugin they are currently using.
You can download WP Online Backup from wordpress.org.
